John Allan Guthrie

John has been the pastor of Community Church since June 2006.  He and his wife, Nancy, are the parents of three no-longer-children, ages 21, 18, and 14.

John has degrees in physics from Austin College and the University of Texas at Dallas.  Before hearing and heeding a call to ordained ministry, John was a software engineer, research physicist, and university professor.  He received a Master of Divinity degree from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in May 2006.

Pastor’s Message:

“Centered in Christ…Cultivated in Community…Called to Care.” These three statements summarize the essence of, and the challenge to, the Community Presbyterian Church of Lake City, Colorado. For over 130 years the little wooden-frame sanctuary has stood on the corner of Fifth Street and Gunnison Avenue in Lake City. Over those many decades Community Church has served the town of Lake City and the world in the name of Christ, building up disciples and sending them out in mission.

That mission remains the same today. We recognize our calling and responsibility to provide authentic and joyous worship, warm fellowship for our members and friends, deep and profound growth in discipleship, contagious evangelism, and committed mission to our community and world. We acknowledge and embrace God’s claim on us to be missional, that is, to be outwardly-focused in all that we do.

In all of these endeavors Community Church strives to remain “Centered in Christ,” for it is only in and through the living Lamb of God that we are able to live and serve as the people of God. We embrace and celebrate our adoption as God’s children, thanks to the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, and we joyfully employ our God-given gifts as disciples of Christ in the world by the power of the Holy Spirit. “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!” (Rev. 5:13). Amen!
